Self-efficacy, effort, and performance perceptions enhance psychological responses to strength training in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I athletes. J Strength Cond Res 38(5): 898-905, 2024-This study examined the effect of self-efficacy, effort, and perceived performance on positive well-being (PWB) and psychological distress (PD) following high-intensity resistance training sessions in collegiate student-athletes. An observational field study design was used to collect data before and after resistance training sessions in a 4-week preseason strength training block. A multilevel model assessed day-level and person-level variance in acute PWB and PD. Interaction terms were also tested at the day level. Alpha was set at 0.05. Within a 4-week training block, training session intensity did not predict changes in acute psychological responses. After controlling for an athlete's preexercise psychological state, higher self-efficacy, daily effort, and perceived performance predicted higher PWB and lower PD following training (p < 0.05). Self-efficacy moderated the relationships of daily effort and performance with PD (p < 0.05). When athletes experienced lower self-efficacy, producing a higher effort and perceiving better performance reduced the negative psychological response. These findings highlight the important mediating role of cognitive variables in the acute psychological response to high-intensity resistance training. Coaches should identify and mitigate low cognitive states to facilitate a positive psychological response to resistance training. This strategy promotes a positive psychological response without altering training prescription.

ABSTRACT: Burke, AA, Guthrie, BM, Magee, M, Miller, AD, and Jones, MT. Revisiting the assessment of strength, power, and change of direction in collegiate american football athletes. J Strength Cond Res 37(8): 1623-1627, 2023-The primary purpose was to assess the effect of strength on vertical jump (VJ) and change of direction (COD) with a secondary purpose to examine if these relationships were moderated by the sport position group through path analysis using structural equation modeling. Subjects were collegiate American football athletes grouped by skill (SK; n = 98) and nonskill (NS; n = 83) sport position groups. Maximal strength was assessed by 1 repetition maximum back squat and hang clean (HC). Vertical jump was used to evaluate power. Change of direction was assessed through the 20-yard shuttle (i.e., 5-10-5) test. Multigroup path analysis examined causal pathways among variables and moderating effects of sport position. The final model revealed that VJ fully mediated the relationship between HC and COD (HC-VJ: ß = 0.408, p < 0.001; VJ-COD: ß = -0.376, p < 0.001; and HC-COD: ß = -0.137, p = 0.17) in SK. The NS showed only direct effects of HC on COD ( ß = -0.335, p < 0.001). These findings suggest that strength does not solely explain COD ability but also can serve to enhance underpinning qualities, such as relative force production in the VJ. Relationships between strength, power, and COD are different depending on the positional group. The results provide further insight into performance outcomes in field tests. It is recommended that sport position differences be considered when assessing and analyzing physical qualities in a team setting within the sport of American football.

ABSTRACT

The identification of aged latent fingerprints is often difficult, especially for those of children. To understand this phenomenon, the chemical composition of children's versus adults' latent fingerprints was examined over time using Fourier transform infrared microscopy. Hierarchical cluster analysis revealed that children's and adults' prints were distinguishable for up to 4 weeks after deposition, based on differences in sebum composition. Specifically, adults had a higher lipid content than children, but both decreased over time, attributable to the volatility of free fatty acids. The aliphatic CH(3), aliphatic CH(2), and carbonyl ester compositions changed differently in adults versus children over time, consistent with higher cholesterol and cholesteryl esters in children's prints and wax esters and glycerides in adults' prints. Thus, fingerprint composition changes with time differently in children versus adults, making it a sensitive metric to estimate the age of an individual, especially when the age of the print is known.
